This National Historic
Landmark is rated as one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering
Wonders. The 4,360,000 cubic yards of concrete used to build it would be
enough to pave a 16-foot-wide highway from New York City to San Francisco.
Lake Mead was created by this massive storage area which holds two years of
flow from the Colorado River. Visitors are whisked 520 feet down to the
bottom of Black Canyon to view the hydroelectric generators. A special Hard
Hat Tour offering a behind-the-scenes look at the workings of the dam is
available for USD25 per person. Reservations are recommended for this tour.
Admission to the Hoover Dam Visitor Center, which includes a 35-minute
guided tour, is USD10 for adults, USD8 seniors, USD4 kids 6-16 and free for
children under 6. |
